Do you play fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar or bass, and want to play old-time music with others? Here’s your chance! While giving a nod to some of the classic old time American string -bands, this “string-band” class will get you playing, singing and generally having a good time making music together. Bring instruments, and a couple of tunes / songs, and we’ll see what we can do. If you play multiple instruments, you may want to take the road less traveled, to help with the variety of sound and texture. Non-string instruments are welcome too, though we reserve the right to ration and re-direct multiple percussion instruments (washboard, bodhran, spoons, etc.).

In participation with Jane’s Walk Ottawa, Arthur McGregor will lead a free Folk Walking tour this Saturday (May 3rd) at 1pm. Come spend an afternoon in Old Ottawa South and hear about the current plaques, the folk murals, and the state of folk music in our city. The tour starts here at the Ottawa Folklore Centre (1111 Bank St), then heads south on Bank St, stopping at each Folk Walk Plaque and discussing each Folk Walk star (or maple leaf to be exact). Arthur will lead a song relevant to each person honored in the Folk Walk. A song sheet will be given out for people to sing along as well. The final stop of the Folk Walk is next door to OFC at Stella Luna for gelato!
